i'm not condoning violence, but i do know that the kids who HUNG NOOSES ON A TREE AS A WARNING should have been EXPELLED, not given a 3 day slap on the wrist.... that's very serious.... maybe if the school officials had done the correct thing in terms of punishment it wouldn't have gotten this far...
there are too many existing photographs of lynchings with assorted white people posing and proud of MURDER for that kind of threat to be taken so lightly...
then again, considering the part of the country it happened in, it's really no so surprising at all...
it's really only been a little more than a generation since black people got the vote and other civil rights.... most of those white people protesting and beating and lynching etc, the folks that tried to stop progress are STILL ALIVE today with all their prejudices and intolerant attitudes...
Jena is FULL of people like that... and apparently they've passed it down to their children and grandchildren too....

I do not understand how people who have actually read and researched what has happened in Jenna, LA could possible side on the side of the Gov or school. I mean come on, hanging nooses from a tree, where a black individual sat even though it was reserved for only whites, that ain't even passable as a prank. That is threatening and makes an unsafe learning for the black individuals at that school, and I am pretty sure that as a school you are supposed to ensure the safety of your students.
I am not saying that beating the crap out of a white student for racial taunts is acceptable, however, I do hold that the punishment should fit the crime that was perpetrated. 3 day suspension for a racial threat, that is ridiculous the students that did that should have had there asses kicked out of school and put on trial. Beating up a student at school for racial taunts would fit more into the category of a 3 day suspension.
Support Jenna 6! March in Chicago Sept. 6, 2007 10am starting at NBC and marching to city hall.

Mary Mitchell, Chicago Sun-Times, had a great column on the Jena 6 today.
The whole case is such a throwback--'white' only trees and dangling nooses? The segregated tree alone should have brought out howls of rage from any right-thinking person and that school officials allowed it indicates the racism in the town of Jena is long-standing and toxic. The list of charges against Mychal Bell were reduced to aggravated second-degree battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated second-degree battery but a potential sentence of 22 years applied to a 16 year-old for what is basically a school brawl? That Bell is being tried as an adult for a fight where none of the combatants was hospitalized is utterly appalling. Confusing, stupid, and embarrassing to Louisiana in the extreme but no surprise since Louisiana is an embarrassment Race is still an issue and we should all be working to insure equal justice is applied to everyone.

White america control the news networks and whites do not want to admit there is a race issue. It tells you something when BBC (a British news network ) was first to break this story. If it wasn't for that people not in that immediate area would not even know of this incident. I am from Louisiana now residing in California and know about the racism that runs THICK throughout the deep south. This case needs all the exposure it can get. Even our NAACP has not gotten involved to the best of my knowledge. I have made all the news networks and the NAACP aware of this. It is their duty as news reporting agencies and an association for minorities to report this and get involved. These kids are being railroaded and AMERICA should know. YES RACISM IS ALIVE AND WELL!!!!!!!!!!!

well i don't know why people are not talking about. but for people to say there are getting what they deserve is kinda out there. because if six people tried to kill you by kicking your *** you would not be going anywhere for at least a couple of days, he was home in a couple of hours, and anyone who has ever been to the ER knows most of that time was spent sitting around.but anyway i guess the best answer would be because its something most people outside of the south would think its something that happens all the time in tiny little backwoods towns, and yes I'm from Louisiana, and so is just about my whole family.

I've talked about the Jena 6. I don't see how it's ok for 6 people to beat up on one person, leave race out of it. Let those responsible for beating up another take responsibility. Good luck. 2D
