The basement rocks of the Wits basin are Archean granite, gneiss, and greenstone of the South African Craton. At 3.5 to 4.0 billion years old, they comprise some of the oldest rocks ever found on earth. The rocks are variably deformed and metamorphosed, but almost always contain small gold-bearing (and sometimes uranium) veins that may have contributed to the gold and uranium concentrations in the basin itself.

Since 1888, the Wits Basin has produced over 40 million kg (1 billion ounces) of gold with a current value of US$ 0.65 trillion, making it by far the world's most productive gold district.
