That's a lie about the private schools being better than the public ones. That is a common misconception propagated by the current howard government. To teach in a private school you don't even need a teaching degree so i wouldn't want them teaching my children.
It's hard to say what the good high schools are unless i know the area you are going to be living in. Have a look at www.schools.nsw.edu.au and you will be able to have a look at all the schools in the state.
I am a HSC marker and let me just reiterate that the best schools are not those where you pay high fees, and i see that year after year after year.
Good luck with your choice!
Ok, i just read you said north of sydney so i will add this on - do you mean North Sydney the suburb, northern sydney suburbs or Hornsby, central coast (which is about an hours north of sydney).
If you know a specific area, feel free to email me and i'll give you some ideas about good schools, i think it would be inappropriate for me, as a teacher to name them on yahoo answers. So if you'd like to email me your general area, i'll get back to you.

Good High Schools In Sydney

Sydney's a big place ~ a lot will depend where you live and what sort of education you are looking for.

The first answerer is correct about the selective high schools, but forgot to mention that a student cannot just 'enrol' ~ there is fairly strict criteria to attend selective high schools.

And while it is true there are many fine state (public) schools, NOT all of them are co-ed.

If you say where you might live, how far you wish to travel and public or private education (that is, paying fees to attend or not), we could provide better answers! :-)

Any of the GPS schools. GPS stands for Greater Public Schools, which is actually a contradiction, since all GPS schools are Private schools. Oh I just remembered all the GPS schools are guys only, so lol, that probably won't suit you.

But any of the well respected public schools are also good, and they're all co-ed.

The best are the selective high schools like Sydney Grammar and James Ruse. These are public schools but they select the better students. Private schools are not necessarily any better academically than ordinary public schools and many public high schools have excellent standards.
