Most cities have several game stores. They almost always have a large selection of 'designer' versions of chess, backgammon, etc.
For example, I live in a small city of about 1 million people, and we have 4 game stores that I know, one of which I know specializes in chess sets and table top puzzles (the others focus more on RPGs and comic books).

I think I recall a 3D chess board and pieces from Star Trek Next Generation series. It was also all clear with 3 tiers. I am not sure if you are willing to pay these prices..but they do look cool and modern.

Cribbage boards that are hand crafted by my sister's husband's brother.
Also if you are looking for beautiful scrabble boards, do a search for custom scrabble boards, as there are many makers of these, in many styles.
