One of my favourite books is The Green Mile by Stephen King. Brilliant (one of the reasons the film was so good).
Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz is good too.
And Hannibal, by Thomas Harris was a gazillion times better than the film!
There's also the Belgarion series by David & Leigh Eddings. A very good read.
Not sure either would class as 'inspirational' though.

Even after 40 to 60 years, anything by C. S. Lewis. Begin with "The Screwtape Letters." The Narnia books for children are popular now because of the recent movie, but there is also the space trilogy (Christian fantasy, not science fiction): "Out of the Silent Planet," "Perelandra," and "That Hideous Strength."
I'd also recommend B. J. Chute's "Greenwillow," a wonderfully funny, heartwarming book.

The Hobbit was very inspirational for me. Since reading it, I've moved in to a spacious hole in the ground, went travelling over the mountains and let my toe hair's grow! The freedom is amazing....lol
