Straight answers help people waffle and sympathy clouds the issues do you agree. If I was an alchoholic people would say I was ill, I would say it was my own fault being ill because I like the booze.thats just an exampleI`m not an alco but do you know what I mean.

ALTHOUGH it is often classed as 'mental illness', clinical depression often has as many physical symptoms as mental. The feelings or emotions that are depression symptoms actually begin to cause the physical effects. How this happens is a vital part of understanding depression and the symptoms that come with it.
If you are depressed at the moment some of the following symptoms may sound familiar:
You feel miserable and sad.
You feel exhausted a lot of the time with no energy .
You feel as if even the smallest tasks are sometimes impossible.
You seldom enjoy the things that you used to enjoy-you may be off sex or food or may 'comfort eat' to excess.
You feel very anxious sometimes.
You don't want to see people or are scared to be left alone. Social activity may feel hard or impossible.
You find it difficult to think clearly.
You feel like a failure and/or feel guilty a lot of the time.
You feel a burden to others.
You sometimes feel that life isn't worth living.
You can see no future. There is a loss of hope. You feel all you've ever done is make mistakes and that's all that you ever will do.
You feel irritable or angry more than usual.
You feel you have no confidence.
You spend a lot of time thinking about what has gone wrong, what will go wrong or what is wrong about yourself as a person. You may also feel guilty sometimes about being critical of others (or even thinking critically about them).
You feel that life is unfair.
You have difficulty sleeping or wake up very early in the morning and can't sleep again. You seem to dream all night long and sometimes have disturbing dreams.
You feel that life has/is 'passing you by.'
You may have physical aches and pains which appear to have no physical cause, such as back pain.
It's this wealth of depression symptoms, and the broad scope that confuses many people as to what depression actually is. Explanations rarely cover all the symptoms, and everybody's experience is different.

Some people are easily insulted, so it's good to consider how their feelings MIGHT BE affected before answering.
Some people are 'socially unaware'. This can make them difficult to insult, but it can indicate other emotional problems as well. I'm not saying you're like that.
Tact is a 'lubricant'; it can make people more willing to consider something that's difficult to accept. It's hard to tell without knowing somebody well, how much tact will be the right amount.
Punctuation is also a lubricant. You might be able to type faster without it, but reading the result is just a little more difficult.

because some people can't get by without adding their personal angle, a page of cut & paste or get to the point, if they're too worried about offending anyone on here.
alcoholism is not an illness, it's an addiction that it would be wise in the first place to avoid completely by not drinking at all.
i never did understand why they came up with the illness label.
& wow i just did it, waffled on.
oh well, guess we just can't help ourselves.

Simply fear.
They exhibit anxiety at being- disliked
not being accepted
feeling unlikeable (which they are unable to tolerate adequately)
All humans are emotional 5 year olds. In other words- the even Einstein had a tantrum-throwing toddler as his Id (inner child) conflicting with his super-ego (inner parent).
Simple- fear and anxiety plus the discomfort associated with the thought or experience of those emotions.

Your questions asks 'Why cannot people answer without dressing things up with tact.'
Maybe they can, but maybe 'encouragement through tact can be a considered better approach'!
Being 'tactless' can have the opposite effect.
Personally, I think that you question is pretty stupidly insensitive, but then that's my opinion based on a limited contact and given without tact. (it's an emotional response without intent on any rudeness, but a statement of a [possible] estimation of your intent of your question).
(and as a Post Script, recognising I could be wrong too)
Sash.

I do agree, but there are some very sensitive people. Some need the tough lovin, some need to be made to feel better. It's hard to gauge who they are and how they should be spoken to. So many people just decide to say it in a nicer way.

it depends if you believe psychological illnesses really exist i guess. as i do, i would say you might be an alcholic, and to get a medical opinion, as if you are ill, the chances of stopping on your own are slim. ditto depression "oh just cheer up" is as much help as telling somone with flu to just get better.
