Artificial life is a contrition in terms.
The human mind is not a machine. A machine can not duplicate it workings. A photograph is not the same as seeing. An email is not the same as a letter.
You can not manufacture a soul or spirit. You need that or it won't be living.
Consider a living tuna fish, lying on the deck of a boat. The moment it dies it will have the same chemical composition and components as a living fish. The only difference is that it is dead. The life force is gone.
Putting feathers in your bottom doesn't make you a chicken.

A golem! They are making a golem! Seriously, I liked the last sentence "But them getting out and taking over, never in our imagination could this happen." No, I guess not. Of course, no body ever imagined that computers would be household objects, either. Oh, well....we already have artificial intelligence; might as well have artificial life to go with it. Then the human race will be truly obsolete.

It should be banned. Humans should neither create nor destroy life, that job is God's and we shouldn't use his power for out own twisted desires.

generic people....that's kinda creepy, people playing God......so sad, I'm not for it!âº
edit: the money that the research is costing,..it could definitely be spent on problems that already exist, why spend that money on creating more problems!âº

it should be banned. life is a gift from god, not scientists.
i think they should focus more time and money on the
problems we already have, such as a cure for cancer,
diabetes and so on.

Allow it. This technology will save lives.
They're creating simple cells, not complex, living breathing "animals".
