With not very much money you'll need to rely on some creative talent and/or love. The cost of shipping with probably be 5$ (sry no pounds symbol). Why don't you make a baby book, by taking a cheap photo album and using card paper and making pretty shapes and space for pictures and sayings. Include promts like "babies first tooth" and "babies first bath in the BIG tub" etc. Nothing fancy, but it will be treasured!
Another thing would be knit anything. I would love to get a jumper knit, and every so often mail her or drop off (I don't know the distance, but you said you couldn't just drop in) a new item made from the same yarn like a hat for winter and next some mittens, on going basically free gift, that is very useful (and learning to knit isn't hard, I just started).
Buy a cheap blank diary, and make a cool cover with pressed flowers or ribbons etc, and give it to mom to write down her meals while breastfeeding, breasfeeding times, and bowel movements. It is also handy to write down when you're favorite show is on (she will forget) and any milestones like first smile, to later put into a baby journal.
A poem in a frame. Write her a poem about her pregnancy, birth and the newborn and frame it for her. Very special.
Couponds for back rubs, babysitting, free meals, movie dates, free diaper changes, free hugs and laughter etc.
Those are some ideas, good luck

I'd say that the best thing you can do for your sister and her baby is be there for them - help her out, perhaps cook a couple of meals to pop in the freezer, clean the house, help her with shopping, sit with him while she has a nap etc. When you've got a new baby everything is so overwhelming, it's nice just to sit with someone close to you and feel that you're not on your own. Whatever you decide to do, your sister will know you care - what a lovely sister you are!

I'm not sure how much money you can spend but I bought my very special 'honourary' neice a 'birth bunny' from signatures bears website (or it is available at some stores like Kenny's Cardiology??) It cost $25 incl. postage and came in a nice clear display box and with a pink and blue ribbon. but the special thing about it was it has two huge floppy ears, one pre-printed calico on the inside with name, date, weight, length etc...so you fill in the blanks, and the other was blank so you can write a special message on it. My girlfriend loved it as it was something they could cuddle at night and keep as a beautiful memory. And not too expensive either.
Congrats to your sister and good luck!

If you want to be practical, you can get her a big package of diapers. That would be MUCH APPRECIATED! =) I loved it when friends brought over diapers. The Baby's R Us supreme diapers are so great and they cost just a little less than pampers or huggies. You can get coupons in the babys flyer sometimes in the paper.
If you want to get something "cute" you can always get a little sleeper set- like the gowns. They make them for girls and for boys to sleep in, they make diaper changing in the nighttime so much easier and the prints are nice for boys. =)
Or you can throw a bunch of stuff into a gift bag like baby wipes, baby bath shampoo, lotion, a&d diaper ointment, baby wash cothes, etc...
Also, you can give your time. Spending time over to help is so nice. I missed adult human contact after awhile of being home and my husband was at work. LOL You can help around the house like vacuum or do the dishes, help with laundry. I wish my sisters lived closer!
PS- sounds like you're a great sister to have!! You're sister is lucky!!
You don't have to spend a lot to give a gift that's very welcomed. =)

I was the same when my sister in law had my nephew.
I went to my local arts and crafts place somewhere like the RANGE not sure if you have one, but i bought a little kit that you but the babys hand and footprints into and it sets hard so later in life he can look at how small he was. i think it cost around £10. it may have been less but he is now 9 and trying to fit his hand into the print he made when he was a new born.

Want to do something really nice? Bring your Sister (and presumably her Husband) some nice home cooked meal, frozen.
My Wife and I just had a baby and with a newborn around there's no time to cook. They'll both really appreciate a nice home cooked meal. Failing that, offer to clean up a bit ... I'm sure their place is a mess.

The best thing my sister got me when I had my son was a soft blue blanket and wrapped inside was a picture of him in a frame, I loved it and it probably only cost he £6 all in all but it was my favourite pressie! I don't know where you live but H&M do the best blankets for real cheap!! Good luck x

Best ting I got was a little set with baby lotion, shampoo, baby bath and baby wash. It would have been really cheap to buy and is far more useful than the millions of clothes you get (which cost far more). You could also take her out to get her nails done or make her dinner or something (that's free!)

Go to Boots or Sainsburys or Tesco - they sell really cheap children's clothes. For £5 you could easily get a t-shirt or a litle romper suit and still have change left over for the postage.
Congrats Aunty!
