I'm becoming utterly horrified at the things that come out of their mouthes. Honestly, when I see anyone under the age of 20 open their mouth, I COWER. I can't believe the ignorance. Listening to scene music and calling it emo, calling themselves punks. People who listen to Linkin Park calling themselves metalheads.. Am I the only one it scares? I'm going to put all my money into researching for a cure.

Ok. Here we go. First of all, I'm 17. Yeah, that's riiight. I am an 80's metal fanatic. Well, I listen to other decades and such, as well, but 80's metal.. that's the stuff. Especially 80's thrash. And I wasn't saying anything against the music itself, even though I think all of that is horrid. But I can correctly label other genres of music. I hate that all the kids today.. can't. Everywhere you turn, it's someone wearing a Yellowcard shirt and saying they're a punk. It's just completely unacceptable.

I work in live production in the music industry. it's not all rock & roll; lots of ethnic music & coporate events, festivals and rallies. But when do a lot of indy shows and I find the music of today's kids mostly unlistenable. We recently did a show of "screamo" bands. Everyone of the 5 bands on the bill sounded alike and it was horrible. Also the hardcore shows are hard to deal with because of inexcusable lack of respect for expensive sound gear and the horrible violent mosh pits. And everytime we have done a Leftover Crack show , our truck has been tagged. I was pretty tolerant of and enjoyed most of the music until recently, being a rocker and metal fan from way way back and I consider myself to be an open minded adult. But I remember when going to shows was fun,the mosh pit at an Anthrax or Suicidal Tendancies show wasn't blantant violence (of course if a stage diver landed on you you could get injured). I'm not sure what most of the indy music is all about and the radio airplay new stuff is like "Well how did these people get a recording contract?"
Don't waste anymore of your time worrying about it because the old good music will always be here. Listen to what you like and just think, where is this new music going to be 30 years from now?My favorite albums are 25 year old Judas Priest & Iron Maiden, even older Alice Cooper , Black Sabbath, David Bowie & Genesis!

I think the term "metal" has evolved to what Linkin Park, Staind, etc. are now. The term, as music goes, has changed definiton numerous times since its inception. Some people even defined grunge as metal.

Those who listen to Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy, Avril Lavigne, etc., and label it as "punk" are naive and wrong. Punk music is a middle finger in the face of everything, including the establishment. The bands calling themselves "punk" now are embracing the establishment the way humans embrace oxygen.

None of those people could listen to a record by someone like The Exploited for three minutes without pooping their pants.

I do agree with you and have been thinking the same thing... having read all the answers before me, I agree with most of them too.....

We are guilty of labelling - all of us! But yes, where do they get off calling themselves or their music 'punk'...? That they most certainly arent and that their music most definately isnt!!

They need to stick with the "emo" name.... although I am not sure how it is labelled and what the heck is so damn "emotional" about their music? And wearing black? Wow, that one's never been done before!? By anyone!??!!! These kiddywinks are so-far the most spoilt, mollycoddled, spoonfed generation and theyre 'depressed?' about whatt?!

They need to get out there and really live before they begin crapping on about stuff they have no idea about....

(I grew up in the 80's and loved all the new wave / new romantic stuff at the time but I didnt walk around thinking I was the "new wave!"

As for finding a cure, I think it's called a "Big kick up the bum!"

I think all this Pop-punk is an insult, they are just a bunch of kids with no political awareness or musical talent. As for the Emos, they are just some fad that will be laughed at in five years.

i agree. i seriously can't believe some of my fellow kids/teenagers even though i'm a teen myself. whenever people say "oh look Fall Out Boy is punk, yay" i just feel like kicking them to the ground and swear they'd never say that again as long as they live.
<--- this teen punk right here listens to The Exploited, Anti-Flag, The Unseen, Black Flag, Oxymoron, i could go on and on.
it especially angers me when emos say they're punks. my bleedin' ar$e, they don't know the first thing about it, the stupid poseurs..

LOL I get what you were saying. It makes me not want to ask my younger sister anything concerning music for fear of what she will say. (She's 18 and has ok taste for her age, but come on!) The emo and punk thing really annoys me too. EMO??? WTF IS THAT? (yes i know what it MEANS, it's just the most stupid term I think I've ever heard.) And another note... why is it cool to be a guy and wear girl jeans, dye your hair black and then brush it into your face. Can't you be "emo" without looking like a douche?

I'm 14 and I think all that stuff is stupid. Labeling just leaves people out and I know I'm not a label because I like all kinds of things!! Is it wrong for teens today to like more than one thing? I feel as if we have to fit into a group or something to be accepted.. its wrong. And I do swear but only if its necessary! Its more or less part of culture, its in the songs, people swear around tiny kids and have you heard the kids on supernanny recently?? Little kids as young as 3 swearing and spitting at their mums!!! I was never a bad kid and I have a close relationship with my mum, we are really good friends but every tv show for teens our age shows much less about parents and its all about friends and guys and looking thin and pretty. I have to say, our generation is pretty corrupted =(

I'm 36 and think the most annoying thing about metalheads AND punks is them trying to figure out who's "poser" and who's not. I honestly don't give 2 craps who's emo and who isn't and who's "real" metal and who isn't. If I like it, I like it...if I don't, I don't.

I like some Yellowcard, I like some Ramones. (yes, I know the Ramones weren't "emo".)
I like some Judas Priest, I like some Linkin Park.

They don't HAVE to be mutually exclusive you know...
