I was teaching freshman English at SMU in Dallas, Texas, at that time and was home visiting my parents for the Labor Day weekend. I was doing something in another part of the house away from the TV, when my late dad, the perpetual news junkie, left his easy chair to tell me that Princess Diana had been in a car crash in Paris, but had survived. I also remember assigning the text of her brother Charles' funeral speech as a modern example of persuasive rhetoric to my composition classes.

Staggered home from the nightclub a bit drunk, only to put the TV on and see the news flash saying she had been hurt in a car crash, this later changed to she had been died. Went to sleep and was woken up by my dad to be told what I already knew.

I was getting horendously drunk with an old friend I hadn't seen in years. When I heard the Princess had died, I thought they met Margaret.

I'd just been horse riding. It was lunchtime on Sunday (we hadn't had the TV or radio on that morning so we hadn't heard).

I got into the car and my ex told me what had happened - he'd just heard it on the car radio. I was so shocked, for a moment I thought he meant Princess Anne!
