I have a detached garage, and would like power to hoover out the car, mow the lawn, lights, possibly alarm etc.

Is it worth my while fitting a wind turbine for the bit of power I need intermittently.

Tallpaul,
I couldn't answer that in proper terms, just a bit of power now and then.

As for the previous poster, my garage is across the back street from my house, and would cost me approx £1000 to run the electric from the extension, over the local authorities back street (which i have to pay a grant for!) and into said garage.
New toy, don't think so, I have 2 small kids so i have enough on my hands you fool!

No, get a small generator for the hoovering and lights, a petrol mower, and a solar powered alarm. A turbine would cost far too much, you would be as well to put the money into installing a power supply and a meter. If your garage is one of a row, share the cost with the others??

If you are talking about wind turbines that B&Q sell, they are wired directly into the mains of your house to feed the national grid.

If you are talking about a 12V dc wind turbine, then you'll need a bank of batteries and an inverter.

How much power do you need in your garage?

First of all, you will need planning permission, which will stall at the first obstacle as soon as your neighbour objects. Secondly, your turbine would have to be enormous to generate enough electricity to reach 240volts. Do you live on an island all alone, because they might be able to sway it in your favour a bit.
