If you have wrong approach based on wrong data it would be a mistake. However, if you have a wrong approach due to right data it would be an error. In Case, of error you can re-consider same right data for taking new result. In case of mistake you have to collect again right data then you have to find new result. This is the difference between error and mistake.

Although it is quite common to use them interchangeably, I believe there is a subtle difference between an error and a mistake.... the difference is to be found in the degree of intent.... an error gets committed whereas a mistake is made..... as the word indicates, a mistake happens due to a 'mis' 'take' meaning that an error of judgment may cause a mistake to be made... an error is totally unintended or devoid of intention, which is why error is used to denote human slip ups or mechanical failures etc....... also the reason why errors are glossed over by the saying 'to err is human'.... this saying does not apply to a mistake where the degree of intent is not so negligible.

Well, as I see it, error & mistake are in many contexts interchangeable, but error often implies a deviation from a standard or model, while mistake is preferred in the common situations in everyday life. It was a mistake to think that so & so would get here on time; an error in logic, or a typographical error. Error is also used in a theological sense, meaning sin, (not mistake), as perceived as a deviation from moral standards (as above). For a less boring & more human answer, see enki!

Agree with small and enki:)
While the word error has different precise meanings in different domains, it is always related to the lack of correlation between the intended consequences of an action and the actual consequences of that action.
Mistakes are a part of being human. A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Truthfully, we all make mistakes. it's individualistic. it could be a mistake for you to pursue your impossible dream.. but never an error not unless you didnt learn from the hardship and the rude awakening. Strong people make as many mistakes as weak people, the difference is strong people admit them as mistakes, then laugh at them, eventually learn from them... That's how they become strong.
The weak ones thought they're errors.... something to get over with... nothing to learn from...
and That keeps them weak.

according to me, error is a something which you commit as a deviation from accuracy.
mistake on the other hand arises out of misjudgment and misconception and misunderstanding.
