The Box Jellyfish of Northern Australia and the tropical Pacific is one of the deadliest creatures on earth. Quoting the Queensland Department of health: "If you are stung swimming, you will most probably not make it to the shore alive". There have been quite a few fatalities, but fortunately, it is seasonal, and is only found in the less populous areas.

Another Australian species, the irakanji is also very poisonous, but not often fatal. The feature of its sting is that the initial sting is not severe, but after a couple of hours, there is a delayed reaction, which can be quite agonising.

By comparison, the Portugese Man O War is not nearly as poisinous, but many more people are stung by these world wide jellyfish.

Few jellyfish are fatal, the most common mentioned is the Portuguese Man o' war but technically it's not a jellyfish, it's a siphonophore. The Lion's mane jellyfish is the most toxic jellyfish and can cause death in humans, the Irukandji jellyfish causes illness (Irukandji Syndrome) but is thought to be fatal in a few instances - the man who discovered it, Dr Jack Barnes, stung himself, his 14 year old son and a lifeguard all on purpose, he earnt an honourable mention in the Darwin Awards but only because all three people survived.
