I would imagine so,a law suit like this would be a civil case and very expensive if they lose it is a bottomless pit.The money from the fund is meant to be For Madeleine. It was inevitable that The McCanns would take this course of action. They are protecting their selves why didn't they protect their Daughter ? If this kind of accusation continues it will damage their professional reputation. But what is the truth. A syringe found in their apartment tells a story.

They are absolutely right to take this newspaper to task. They are in the middle of a parents worst nightmare they have been ridiculed and berated for these past months and for a newspaper to say this awful thing is a step too far. We really need to look more at the behaviour of the journalists instead of criticising this family.

I think they chose to sue because it makes a significant statement that they are not responsible for Maddie's disappearance, I don't think it is for monetary gain.
I do agree though, they should focus their efforts elsewhere. It must be tough though, she has been gone a long time and it seems like they have almost run out of avenues to pursue.
Lets hope it turns out for the best.

They ARE focusing on their Madeleine.
Thats why they threatened to sue.
Its not just their reputation they are defending, their are defending their stance in public which is crucial to finding their Madeleine. All is takes is a cruel rumour to turn the fickle public away & forget all about Madeleine out of disgust for her parents due to such rumours.
They are using their own personal finances.

They are very focused on Maddie. If they wasn't you wouldn't even know she existed,
They are suing for deformation. Does it matter who's money they are using (not wasting)? Any money they use to take this to Court, will be paid back to them in compensation when they win the case.
The fact is they are defending vicious hurtful lies being told about them in the press.
You my dear, would do the same in their shoes.

It will come to nothing - they will not sue. As usual, the McCanns are trying to send out a message to any other journalist who has the audacity to accuse them of something, not to do so. They are trying to make a stand as the tide turns against them - again to silence those who dare to speak out. I have to say that I actually do feel sorry for Kate. She seems to be under Gerry's control - she is almost mute in his presence.

Yet another ill thought out question.
They will be wasting no ones money, under most law, a win means that the other side pays otherwise the McCanns will have a lawyers legal bill which under most circumstances would be paid of in instalments out of their income and not out of the maddie fund that your obviously inferring without saying.
If you had thought about it before posting, you may not seem as stupid as you do now.

i know ppl hate me for believing this but everyone is entitled to their own opinion... i think they r panicking. they know the r close to being found out. they r doing all they can to make it look like they are innocent. lashing out at that newspaper is ridiculour. all they have to do is make a(nother!!!) public statement, calm and sensible, saying that the ppl close to them know they r innocent. surely that would be more believeable than showing themselves up AGAIN!!!
gerry and kate r getting on my nerves big time and i just wish they would go away and leave the police to do their job (albeit slow!).
