The main need for pollination is the exchange of genetic material. Some plants use sexual reporductaion (requires pollen) others use asexual (clone) some use both.

Exchanging genetic material allows for adaptation, mutation and in the end survival. Without the exchange in gentic information and recombination of genes all the plants of the species would be excatly the same and could be wiped out by one disease.
