Um, how would the mother's feces get into the womb?? Im not sure if you are serious on that part of the question. Doctors usually will not let a baby go longer then 2 weeks overdue before inducing for size reasons. When a baby is overdue they gain weight quicker and they also become wrinkled or "prune like" on their skin. They dont ingest their own feces or obviously their mothers.

When a mother is more than 41-42wks pregnant the placenta starts to fail to produce enough oxygen and nutrients to sustain the baby. So that is why doctors induce labour so that the baby is born more healthy.

The faeces you are talking about is called meconium and is the baby's first bowel movement. Normally this shouldn't happen until after it is born but sometimes babies that are overdue/under stress can do a poo in the womb and if they ingest it, it can get stuck on the airways and lungs and is very serious. It is like black tar and if the situation is bad enough they can die from suffocation. However I have never met anybody that this has happened to. When they break a woman's waters during labour they look for a greenish/black tinge to it to determine if the baby is excreting meconium. If it is, they will try and hurry the labour up and also monitor baby through the belt on the mums tummy. Also if it happens at home, they woman should be looking out for this green tinge to the waters.

Hope that helps answer your query!

The only time a fetus could possibly ingest faeces is if it goes into distress and poo's inside the womb. This can happen for a few reasons but it happened to me because I was overdue and my sister made me drink castor oil. This made my baby go into distress and poo and the doctors said it was lucky he didn't inhale it as that can cause infections.

But it doesn't happen to every overdue baby. Babies don't know we have them on a timetable...which is something WE figure out by dates etc...babies come when THEY are ready...and not before. Not much happens if they are overdue except they do get quite a bit bigger in the last few days...my son was 10 days overdue and weighed 9lb 5oz. Ouch! My other babies that came around their due dates were quite a bit smaller thank goodness.

go to whattoexpect.com.. they probably have your answer there. But I do know that it's possible for an overdue baby to ingest their own feces/urine b/c it's swimming around in their w/ them. But then that raises a concern for the baby , who could get an infection and get really sick.

This is the childs faeces. As the child has been absorbing nutrients from the mother for over 9 months, its body begins to identify waste matter and therefor, begins to seperate it. This may happen from 1 week overdue. This then causes many problems for both the mother and the foetus. The womb may become infected and if the childs mouth is open in the womb, it may become sick and go into distress. This is why doctors encourage a C section. If you need more information, you may want to speak to a family health adviser or your doctor GP.
