Though.

First of all, the deal with the current set of DX10 cards is, buy one if you are desperate with your old one.
Your best bet now is to download the Bioshock demo and see how it runs on your machine (which is not bad at all), and that is a glimpse at the future.

Nobody knows for sure how DX10 will perform on the current generation, since there are no "real" DX10 games out there so far (just DX9 games with implemented-at-the-last-second DX10 component, not DX10 from scratch).
So I think if you wait for the 9xxx, you buy that one, not really the 8800GTX.

Now about consoles... well I haven't had a console since the old dreamcast, so I am just a PC user now, but, have in mind it's pretty much the same thing nowadays. Consoles are nothing but brand PCs by Microsoft, Sony etc... they are practically PCs now, and you can hook up a mouse and keyboard so its not like it will be hard to play shooting games like it was in the past (I played Q3 on my Dreamcast, online... suffices to say everybody laughed at me, controllers suck yeah!). They also can play movies and do pretty much all of the "entertainment" things you can do in a PC.

But you already have a PC and with a videocard upgrade you should be able to have it going... but also consoles so cheap in price right now, that you could get a xbox 360 for the price of the 8800GTX (I think, dunno much about console prices), so that's something to consider.

Plus most of the games nowadays are released on all systems including PCs, except for those sweet exclusives, like MGS 4.

Since its likely for the current generation of consoles to last for a couple of years more (and maybe 3 or 4 while the other consoles "get it going"), then for you in this case it might be a good choice to get one and stop suffering with drivers and "this game wont run" etc etc. Of course, never forgetting that PC graphics will always get better with time, while consoles are "stuck" with their hardware usually.

well, first of all when you decide between console or PC games, you should look at the kind of games you wants to play. If you like arcade racing simulator, fighing, RPG (especially the Japanese PS3 platform) then go for either of the console, xBox being a more western kind of platform with Halo games all.

If you prefer PC games such as FPS and RTS (I can't imagine playing RTS on a console) and sports simulator (actually sports sim is pretty much multi platform, nothing to worry about) by all means stick to PC.

Don't ever choose a platform base on your budget, the long term consequences is not worth it.

GeForec 9 is still months away, at least we won't be hearing anything about it for another 3 months, or 5 months for it to hit the market. You can get a GeForce 8800 now, whichever suits your budget. And when you feels like getting a next gen card in the future, sell off your GF8800 as second hand hardware.

Waiting to buy a card when its price is down isn't really a good thing, as by the time it does so, it's already a yesteryear card, which will still work well with yesteryear's game of course, but may not be too good with the future newer ones.

If your impatient, buy a 360. If not and you can afford a good rig, wait for the 8800gtx.
