Guardian - 24th August

"The parents of missing Madeleine McCann will not take legal action over a series of alleged smears against them in the Portuguese media, a family spokeswoman has said."

"Kate and Gerry McCann's spokeswoman Justine McGuinness stated the pair were not considering legal action against Ms Felgueiras.

She said: "Kate and Gerry are not planning to sue anyone. They are focused on finding Madeleine."

Guardian - 31st August

"The parents of missing Madeleine McCann are to launch a libel action against a Portuguese newspaper which said police believe they killed their daughter."

--------------

Sorry Madeleine, apparently the focus is no longer on finding you (as Justine clearly stated just a week ago) ........ your parents are a disgrace.

* I will make this prediction though, contrary to what they are saying and what all the papers are saying today, I bet they won't actually go through with the action. You'll see .....

It has all the hallmarkins of a pre emptive strike by Team McCann... he who sues first sues hardest. The problem is that the McCanns will get such a grilling in open court that they will wish they had not been born. If they sue in Portugal the Portuguese already detest them and I cannot see a sympathetic jury. If they sue in the UK, Gerry and Kate have to realise that the UK libel laws profide their opponents a field day in court. Meanwhile the general public in the UK are thinking 'hold on my donation of £10 was to find Madeleine, not to sue a pisspoor Portuguese newspaper.

The Team McCann have now lost the plot - the only way is down and when they hit the bottom they will know it BIG TIME !

"This is all about the money. If the McCanns were worried about what people thought of them, they wouldn't have prostituted themselves to the press for over a hundred days while constantly changing their story."

Exactly! I have never seen a "missing child" story like this before. It still amazes me and has done since the beginning. It was headline news so early on. I do think that the main point has been lost. A little girl has gone missing and they left their three children alone. If we didn't have 24 news, the Internet, etc., then this "story" would not have been so prominent. I really dislike the power of the media as far as this story goes. I had a thought that perhaps she had been taken by an upset patient of theirs? Who knows. I do agree that there seems to be so many conflicting stories. The "celebrity" culture and obsession with so much detail has allowed the parents to overshadow this whole sad thing.

If they sue they might be lucky and win. I don't know where Portuguese law stands on this.

In the UK it's a pretty dangerous thing to do. Newspapers are ruthless and will dig out every single bit of dirt that they can find on you, whether or not it is connected to your libel suit.
Remember all the prurient details that the papers gloated over when Gillian Taylforth sued? Archer and Aitken didn't come out of it too well either.

The McCanns would do much better by returning to the UK. It wouldn't matter so much what the Portuguese press said then. In fact, they might let it drop if the McCanns were out of sight.

These are calculated threats by the McCanns to do what Gerry is good at ie .take the heat off himself and turn it onto others. I think they will chicken out too. Idle threats.... nothing else better to do i think. Oh I forgot, they could be searching for Maddy...silly me.
This man is very clever and he is winning this war .I think they are going to get away with all this
EDIT. The only good thing to come out of this suing thing is that they will be allowed to talk about the case in court because it will be part of legal proceedings.I wonder what Gerry will think about the silence thing being taken away????

I think they are treading on dangerous ground here. The public opinion of the McCanns and their behaviour is already waning, suing this paper will cause more damage and will encourage others especially in Portugal, to start procedings of their own towards the McCanns.
I agree too that it is probably just a threat and doubt they will follow it through.

I am fed up of seeing thier ***** faces everywhere. They didn't only leave the one child alone they left 3..... What if all 3 had been abducted.??. And for what???..... So they could go out on the p*** with thier yuppie mates. Didn't seem bothered about the kids when thier own needs kicked in. I have hears it said too many times that you could never find better parents than the Mc Canns.... Well for a start.... I am a better parent, cos I wouldn't leave my kids and certainly not for a few beers or in thier case champayne cocktails no doubt.Sorry bad spelling there. If they had been a couple of factory workers none of this hype would be taking place and they would be charged with neglect to boot. Now these pair are going to sue a news paper............ Somebody should tell them to be very careful, after all they broke the law by leaving 3 yes THREE children to the mercy of a very wicked world.

Hey dave, glad your back! Its all been a bit slow on here re the Mccann's without you.

Perhaps the Mccann's and their advisers think the threat of suing, knowing they have top lawyers representing them, will be enough for the paper to print an apology and retraction.
As for the focus being on Madeleine, when was that ever the case with the Mccann's?
I feel that what the Mccann pair would like to do now is to return home, preferably with the £1 million in their pocket, and carry on as normal - although no doubt Gerry still secretly aspires to be a chat show host.

If Gerry can see a quick buck to be made for damage to his reputation he'll be straight in there. This is all a farce and has been since day one.

Well, they aren't getting any more contributions into the fund, so they'll have to add to it with libel damages instead...

This is all about the money. If the McCanns were worried about what people thought of them, they wouldn't have prostituted themselves to the press for over a hundred days while constantly changing their story.
