In 1975 International Harvester built a V8 diesel tractor that would switch between 4 and 8 cylinders but was not very successful. They used a mechanical device to make the switch, if they had computers back then it probably would have worked much better.

Cadillac's Northstar system does this. however it is more well known on the CTS that was custom built a few years back that had a v-16 engine, the first built since the 40's.

the engine would only use 4 cylinders when idling, or maintaining speed, but when you mashed on it, the computer would slowly (about 1/2 a second) turn all 16 cylinders on for the added power request from the driver. once the pedal was released it would start shutting the cylinders back off (2.4 sec to return to 4 cyl). this helped Cadilac conserve fuel when it used the monster engine in the 24 hrs of LeMans

this Idea of doing it to a truck engine is not new, the Idea has been around since the early 80's. the technology today would support this, however most auto manufactures are backed by major oil companies, and thus, they do not release products to save on fossil fuel consumption unless they have too.

the Diesel engine was not intended to use fossil fuels, it was originally designed to run on the highly combustible oils in a breed of the marijuana plant.
