Three 3rd year college students of engineering, mathematics and physics were classmates in Math 307. They were standing around the college flagpole when an English professor wandered by. " What are you doing?", he asked.

"We need to know the height of the flagpole," answered one, " and we're discussing the formulas we might use to calculate it."

"Watch!" said the English professor. He pulled the pole from its fitting, laid it on the grass, borrowed a tape measure and said, " Exactly 24 feet." Then he replaced the pole and walked away.

"English professor!" sneered the math student, "We ask him for the height, and he gives us the length."

Is this a parable? And the morale is .... what?

Don't pull flagpoles from it's fitting? LO!

Thanks, Celestine. I remembered my English teacher because of this. She was in fact, very supportive. We called her the CAT, because she moves like one, with beauty and grace and oozin with sex. And she sings like an angel. She had been to New York, a Broadway singer. Our school, a public one at that, was very lucky to have her. She sang for us something from Camelot, and I was hooked with musicals from then on.

That is good. It is actually the Math professor's job to explain the logic in the fact that the height of the same thing is its length when placed in a horizontal position. Should this take brain surgery? Hehehe.

Going back to your question, I actually had a crush on one English teacher who was not only good and supportive, but also ravishing. And once I had an English teacher who sent me to the principal's office for correcting her grammar in front of our class, when I was in high school.

Oh Celestine!!!! that's the funniest story I've heard in ages!
But he should have been a math professor. Or logic.

Regarding your question though, I was in 6th grade when I had to leave Czechoslovakia, my papa forced me to speak English, and I entered an American school in Germany for 7th grade. Not only my English teacher, but all of them were very supportive, and the only English word that I remember having trouble with, is the pronunciation of the word damn - was it Tagalog style, or just DAM? ;-)

eagerly waiting for continuation....

Oh, okay that's the end...sorry, celestine, I was waiting for some nasty remarks from the eng'g and physics studes. tsk tsk you just have to love these science majors...they lack imagination in some respects - like black is black and white is white and 1+1 will always be 2.

And yes, my English professor was most supportive of my studies and would have sneered at me if I were to use height and length interchangeably. Altho in your story, the English prof was right.

Yes my English professor was very supportive, but sometimes she'd just wait for me to make a mistake so she could pounce on it. She takes delight in that, I think. Once I said "there are there" and she couldn't stop laughing (and kicking too) while I retreated in a corner and cried. (Engineers have feelings too.)

that's a nice one Celestine.

My English teachers were truly supportive and patient. But my brain was not very cooperative.

On the contrary, our english teacher was uncomfortable teaching us. Looking back, I could not fathom why. Hahaha!
