Until the early 11th century, the land that is now Scotland was divided between the peoples of four nations - The Scots of Dalriada in the north-west, the Picts in the north-east, the Britons of Strathclyde in the south-west and the Anglo-Saxon Jutes of Northumbria in the south-east. By 1034 these four nations had become united as Scotland, either by treaty or conquest. The border at that time was considerably further south than it is now.

The border changed considerably over the subsequent years, especially during the incursions of Edward 1st, in his attempted conquest of Scotland. The border now remains much as it was after the battle of Bannockburn in 1314 and the Declaration of Arbroath in 1328, which marked ultimate failure of that attempted conquest and re-affirmed Scotland's independence, which thereafter was recognised by the church and largely respected by England until the Act of Union was signed in 1707, joining Scotland with England and Wales in the United Kingdom.

The border has changed many times through history. For example, if the Battle of Stamford Bridge had gone the other way the border may have extended all of the way down to Morecambe Bay. Berwick was once one of the most imporant towns in Scotland, not of course it is in Northern England, though funnily enough their footie team still plays in Scotland.

Most people have said Hadrian's Wall, but that's crap. Egnland & Scotland didn't exist back then so how could it be the original border between the two countries?

Land Borders are fairly arbitrary and change considerably over time. I think the current border was confirmed when James 1 became King of Scotland and England in the 18th century.
