So he could get his 1st save? His future is not about getting saves. Its about getting wins and losses.
Now under the Joba rules, he will only be able to pitch once against the Mariners. That was a terrible move to make him pitch yesterday.

I thought it was good that he came in for the 8th.
However, Ramirez should have started the 9th.

And according to the "Joba Rules", here's when he will be able to pitch again:

vs. Tampa Bay
FRI
SAT- Eligible
SUN

vs. Seattle
MON- Eligible
TUES
WED- Eligible

However...if they count the 9th as his 2nd inning, than he will only be able to pitch on :
Sun and Tues...

Originally he was only going to pitch the 8th inning, with Mariano coming in to get the save in the 9th. But when the Yanks scored more runs in the bottom of the 8th, it become apparent that if Mo came in, it would not be a save situation. Mo could use the rest, so Torre kept Chamberlain in to see how he would react to a save situation to see maybe if he could use Joba down the strech if Mo is not available. Also, Joe probably wanted to nail down the door and make the sweep certain by leaving in a great pitcher like Joba.

i think once the situation gets more critical Torre will flex on the "Joba rules".

i think he wanted him to get a taste of a playoff atmosphere and to boost the kid's confidence up. He pitching lights out right now!!! Plus Mariano needed an extra day of rest.

Ok so he did. He's a youngster and used to pitching far more innings in the minors than hes getting in the majors. Hes marked for a starter next year so give him some more innings already.

He won't pitch more than one game against Tampa Bay, so he'll be available to pitch twice against Seattle if they need him to. That's provided they only use him for the one inning.

Yes, for 1 inning anyway. there's no better proving ground to a pitcher then a Yanks, Redsox game. If you can handle that pressure, you can handle anything. I can't wait to see how he handles the hostel Fenway crowd.
