45x+(45+10)x=250 miles
45x+55x=250
100x=250
x=2.5hours

Distance = rate * time
Rate=45 mph for the first car, 55 mph for the second car
Time is unkown

250= 45t+55t
250= 100t
t= 250/100 or 2.5
2.5 hours

d1 = 45t distance car1 travels in time t
d2 = 55t distance car2 travles in time t

The distance the 2 cars travel must equal 250 miles when the cars meet and pass each other. So:
d1 + d2 = 250 = 45t + 55t = 100t

So t = 2.5 hours

They will pass each other in 2 and one half hours

They will take time
= 250/(45 + 45 + 10) hrs
= 2.5 hrs
distance /speed = time
