Neither!
The old Chicago Stadium (late 80s or so), The Detroit Olympia (1980), the Boston Garden (late 90s or so), the Montreal Forum (1995), and Maple Leaf Gardens (1999) were all much better places to enjoy a game than the big boxes they have now. Hell, Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo was a great place to watch hockey...compared to the Bank Box they're in now.

The Joe...Haven't been to the United Center,
You can feel the HISTORY when you walk into the JOE. Seriously, the "atmosphere" is awesome, the fan's are real hockey fans (at least in the seats I can afford), You can't get a bad seat in the house. I can't imagine watching the Wings play anywhere else! I love that it's not named after corporate America.
However, it is getting a bit dilapidated. It's more like a hockey rink then a new-fangled arena/event center. I think it's a great place if you're a die-hard fan, but I'll admit it probably come's off pretty sketchy to the casual hockey fan. I'll shed a tear or two if they tear it down, but I won't be emotionally crushed or anything.

Sometime during last season there was an article out on one of the major sports websites ranking all the arenas in North Americas major sports and the Joe was the worst in hockey, and Im about 80% sure it was last on the whole list. So although I have never been to the United Center, I would have to say its better than the Joe.

Better in what way? The U.C. is newer/nicer but doesn't have the history of the Joe. If I had to pick between the two I would say the Joe. I've never been to it but watching the games played there on t.v. makes you feel like ur at an old fashioned hockey game with the organ man (their organ man is not better than Frank Pellico but I like the music selection at the Joe better- unless it's a recording???? Idk, I've never been there) Maybe a dead wings fan can answer that.
Here in chicago, nobody cares for the U.C because we had the granddaddy of them all THE STADIUM. You left that place with your ears ringing I swear to God! It was nuts. As a kid, I saw this Red Wings fan get tossed off the balcony to the lower level! Anyway, the U.C. is nice but it sucks.

The United Center is much cleaner, more spacious and has many more amenities (the Joe has port-o-potties OUTSIDE the arena for fans), but nowhere near the 'character' and history of Joe Louis.

The Joe is a dump. About the only thing they have going is they have a hockey team.
Maybe someday Chicago will get a new owner and he will make the Blackhawks into a real team again.
