Hi. My wife and I are to the point where we are talking about trying to get pregnant. Now, she is a very small woman (5,2 110lbs) and fairly "tight" downstairs. I know in some cases they have to cut the perenium in order to let the baby out, but I'm wondering if there's anything we can or should do to maybe help stretch and prepare her so she's able to give birth easier? Like practicing with and gradually stepping up to larger and larger sized objects? Could that make child birth easier?

I'm 5'3" and unfortunately overweight but rather "tight" myself. I have a 2 1/2 year old. When I gave birth I had an episiotomy and still had 4th degree tears (the worst you can have). All my stitches healed fine; still very tight. I am pregnant with my second (only 6 weeks) but when I meet with my OB I am going to ask her what I can do to make sure I can have a vaginal birth again. I've heard of massaging the vagina shortly prior to giving birth (I'm not sure if it's done by the doctor only or if you can do it at home). Don't use objects which could be dangerous and cause potential harm to the baby by introducing bacteria.

Episiotomies (when the cut the perenium) are becoming less and less common. Usually doctors will only do that in extreme cases.

Putting large objects is not really going to help with labor. One thing you can do is kegel exercises. These "work out" the vaginal muscles, and will actually help make child birth easier. To target the right muscles, have your wife stop her pee in mid-stream. The muscles she uses to stop the pee are her kegel muscles.

Once she knows how to tighten and relax them, she should practice many times a day. She can do repetitions and also can try holding the muscle tight for 10 or 20 seconds at a time. She can also use these muscles during sex, in order to get them stronger. (Bonus for you!)

Hope this helps...

I had this same problem before i got pregnant and I massaged my perineum every day. I was terrified that my baby wouldn't come out and when the time came he not only came out fine, but I didn't tear, didn't have to be cut, didn't feel a thing down there, and had a 100% natural childbirth in a breeze (with only 15 minutes of pushing). So this obviously worked for me.

no. if she has it vaginally they will cut her. episiotamy. My wife is 5'2 also but 96 pounds. my first she had vaginally, but they cut her. the second was a c-section. Since your wife is smaller pay attention to her blood pressure since my wife developed toxemia. 1 doctor contributed it to her petite size.

I don't think so, but yoga classes and special physical training classes for the pregnant will do you lots of good!
