I want to take it to school (so think standing, probably tilted, in an empty backpack) since I'm going to be staying with a friend for a week and I won't be able to go back home during that time, but I don't want to damage it. I want to bring it, but I want it to last even more.

Well if not, someone had better tell the Laptop Case Makers - Mine allows my laptop to be one it's side when it's in the case. :)
Yes, it's perfectly fine, even when it's turned ON. Just be sure the airflow can still make it through the vents and can't be easily knocked over.

It's perfectly fine, more concern is ventilation for laptop just turn off, but since you said 'empty' it'll be just fine.

As long as it's off...you're fine. I do it to mine all the time. Just...obvoiusly dont' bash it around.
