I believe that the problem lies with our maps. In school, elementary students ARE given maps of the US with the states clearly marked and the US borders clearly marked above at Canada and clearly marked below showing Texas.
The reason Americans have trouble located the US on a world map is that the world map is (a) distorted if it's a flat map and (b) shows the US without clear borders between Mexico and Canada. The US is not as easy to spot as say, Austrailia.
...or maybe it's just bad map skills.
PS- That chick should be ashamed of herself. She'd have been better off just saying "I don't have a clue."

Because "..most Americans don't have maps.." as said by your Miss Teen South Carolina lol. Either that or they didn't know that their country was actually called the "United States of America" instead of America

What? The US is like the fourth largest country in the world. If you can't find France in the map it's ok. But the US? Are they blind?

The sad state of public education and interest. Even more frightening is the fact that only one in five adults in the U.S. has ever read the Constitution.

not enough geography classes in schools!
and also it is NOT about more money in schools, like some have said here, but (like we say in the Navy) is also a case of "lack of give a fu....k" by teachers and students!!, who for the most part are more worried about their cell phones and MTV than learning!
just watch the movies "Lean on me", and "Stand and deliver"!
simple!
