what is the shortest it should be?

It doesn't. It can go on for hours (as in a one person "show"); or it can last a Sentence. There are no time restraints for a monologue.

Well, monologues can be any length at all, but if you're talking about audition monologues, you should aim for between two minutes and four. Two is barely long enough, and four is a little long. Three makes a good length.

A monologue that is fast paced and interesting is important to keep the listener's attention, and if you have a really well written monologue that can hold an audience's interest, you can even stretch it to five minutes.

When I was auditioning for South Eastern Theatre Conference, you got 90 seconds to sing AND act and only 60 seconds if you did only 1 -- sing or act. So most people had well-rehearsed auditions with 45 seconds each, approximately.. But in a panel discussion on auditions, directors said they can usually tell everything they need to know from the first 15 seconds of your monologue. So don't feel like you absolutely must go on for 2 minutes unless the audition has a set minimum,

Should be about 2 minutes, more or less. It has to be long enough to demondstrate that you can act, but not so long as to be tedious.
