Always remember to take care of the exponents before doing the multiplication. Let me show you why:

If you don't do the exponents first, here's the answer:

2 x 2 = 4 then square that and you get 16

But, if you do the exponents first you get

2^2 = 4 then 2 x 4 = 8

8 is the right answer. Always do the exponents before the multiplication...there is an order of operations.
