I am very clueless when it comes to techie stuff, but I just purchased a Gateway laptop with these specs and it's really slow, even when it comes to typing..
80GB Parallel ATA hard drive (5400 rpm)
64MB HyperMemory (total of local and shared system memory used by GPU); high-definition audio (2-channel)
Built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g); 10/100 Mbps
Ethernet LAN with RJ-45 connector; high-speed V.92 data/fax modem
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic Edition operating system preinstalled; software package included with Microsoft Works 8.5, CyberLink DVD Solutions and Adobe Acrobat Reader
**i upgraged to 1.5GB now of RAM, and I though that would help it go faster, but it didn't.. Vista i think is pre-installed and I don't know how to go back to just XP, i personally don't really give a d*mn about Vista.. You think Vista makes it slow? PLEASE HELP! Thanks!☺

you probably have too many applications running. In the window above the start button type in msconfig then open the startup tab and uncheck all the programs you don't need starting up and running all the time such as quicktime real player messengers works etc. If you have Nortons anti-virus switch to AVG because Nortons is a resource hog. A puter is like a boat the more people(programs) you have in it the slower it goes.

The problem is the processor and the OS.... It's horrible, I think Microsoft made Windows Vista Home Basic slow on purpose.... Anyways, upgrade to Home Premium, it should run faster then the speed of sound if you do so. Use the Anytime Windows Upgrade. I've read an extensive report about this some where... When I find it, I'll give you a link.
PEOPLE IT ISNT A VIRUS. I HAVE THE EXACT SAME LAPTOP, AND WINDOWS VISTA HOME BASIC IS SLOW.
All right, this is what I answered:
I would favor Windows Vista Home Premium, but I have to say that Windows XP Home Edition is better.
1) Windows Vista Home Basic for SOME reason runs 10 times slower then Windows Vista Home Premium with the same EXACT specs with the very heavy weight Windows Vista Home Premium. (Remember that Windows Vista Home Basic needs 512MB of RAM to run, and Windows Vista Home Premium needs 1Gig of memory to run.)
2)Windows Vista without the Aero Glass effect and a bunch of others included in higher editions, there's just NO point in it. You don't really get an advanced OS except in graphics that you could make yourself. So basically, Windows Vista Home Basic doesn't have any point in running PERIOD. Windows XP uses a lot less graphics power, and because it's been out so long, everyone is comfortable with the style.
3)Windows Vista Home Basic sucks up a LOT more resources then Windows XP and the upgraded versions of Windows Vista.
I've ran BOTH Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows Vista Home Premium AND XP, and Windows Vista Home Basic takes almost 3x more then Windows Vista Home Basic, and 5x more then Windows XP. These are running on ALL of the same specs. It is just WAY slower even though I have beefed up the RAM of Windows Vista Home Basic to 2Gig. That's a LOT and it STILL ran slower then Windows XP on 1gig or RAM. Windows Vista Home Basic is horrible, Just upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium if you EVEN dare to get it, and XP is better then Windows Vista Home Basic.
Source(s):
I have used Windows XP, Windows Vista Home Basic, and also Windows Vista Home Premium on the same machine running the SAME specs for 30 days tabulating the results to give to a friend. (Took 90 days in all). Windows XP and Windows Vista Home Premium are a LOT better, and Windows Vista Home Basic isn't even worth the money.

Well I am not a computer nerd but I might be able to help you out with this problem, well with the experience that I had in the past with coputers, laptops the only thing that is able to make your laptop slow is a VIRUS. If you have your Laptop hooked to the web and dont have the proper antivirus and spyware you are at risk of virus infection that can affect the functions of your laptop.... either that or you got riped off and bought a cheap computer. I would recomend goind to Best Buy the Gueek Squad there can fix it up and have it back to normal./

Maybe you should send it back to the company. If you didnt get it from Gateway directly, like if you got it from HSN or QVC and you have a 30 day money back guarantee than send it back. If you got it from Gateway directly and have a warranty than send it back and either get a refund or exchange it. Its not the brand because I have a Gateway laptop with Vista Premium not basic, and mine work fine. I have a Dell computer and its slow because its old and have only one processor. My laptop have a duo core proccessor- it works better.

your computer is running slowly because that's what gateway computers do, they work great and then just start to give up. if you can afford it go with a dell, and get a very fast processor. if you cant, send it in to gateway and they might be able to fix it.
