There have been a few remakes of old school horror movies in the past few years, the two that stand out in my mind the most are The Fog and Dawn of the Dead, and coming up today is Halloween.
I thought the remake of the Fog was ok but, Dawn of the Dead sucked. They deviated way too much from the story line, where The Fog stuck somehwhat close to the original.
My question is, why all the remakes? On top of that, what's with changing them up? I was pumped about the Dawn of the Dead remake but was sorely disappointed. I think if producers and directors want to remake old school horror movies they should stick true to the original story. Modernizing it a bit is ok, but to change endings, and leave whole parts out I think is plain stupid. Not to mention that in the original Dawn the zombies moved along at a snails pace but in the new one they were lightning fast....
Just curious as to what others' opinions on this are.

Personally, I think that all of the remakes are due to the lack of new ideas (every thing's already been done about a thousand times, and one would be very hard-pressed to come up with something original). That being said, I think you're right: If there's gonna be a remake, stick to the original plan, however, 2 movies you mentioned I'd like to comment on. The first, Dawn of the dead (which I haven't actually seen the remake of), the reason that the zombies were 'lightening fast' as you say, was to give them more of an advantage & make them more adventurous--it was also so that the film could be more of an action thriller than a horror. The 2nd film you mentioned was The Fog, which I saw both versions of. I absolutely loved the original, but I hated the remake, mostly because they took out what I thought was the best part of the entire film, which was the part at the end of the original where the priest gets beheaded. I thought that was classic! Just my opinions, of course!

Well, I thought the Dawn of the Dead was ok, I still love the original though. I couldn't get through the Fog though, I kept nodding off. The original wasn't that great either but at least I stayed awake.

I think all of the remakes because the execs in hollywood are tapped out. They don't want to spend too much time in development because time is money. If the movie with the brand new/weird concept fails the studio loss the money and those same execs will be fired. They see remakes as a comfortable brand. One that you'll be familar with.

You think about halloween, you think Michael Myers, watching it in the theaters or on a grainy vhs and getting scared. You remember watching the sequels and though, getting increasingly bad, once you remember them years later, you'll crack a smile and remember something about them that''l make you want to see the remake.

They are also remaking Day of the Dead and Prom Night.
I sort of am the same as you on remakes.
I don't really mind them at the same time.
What I really don't like is prequels, I heard something about a A Nightmare on Elm Street getting one of those.
What is the point of them? and what is the point to a prequel for that movie? You get told everything about Freddy throughout the series. That is just stupid.
