What is an average monthly income a person has to have in order to afford an apt. in a good neighborhood?

My bf (30) and I (22) have been together for a little over 2 years now and we talk about getting our own place. Possible cities would be Cerritos, Lakewood, Long Beach, Anaheim....

Our average monthly income would be a little less than $4,000. While his credit is great, mine is fair since I'm just starting to build credit.

Would we be able to survive monthly rent of $1100-$1600?

Usually you can spend about a third of your income on rent, so you're in the right range. I'd stay on the low side if you can.
