4x² = -2x - 5
Completing the square
4x² + 2x = -5 >>>Rearrange in the form x² + px = q
4x² + 2x + (2 / 2)² = -5 + (2 / 2)² >>>Add (coefficient of x / 2)² to both sides. x is 2.
4x² + 2x + 1² = -5 + 1²
(4x + 1)² = -5 + 1
4x + 1 = ± √-4 >>>√-4 cannot be simplify because its -
4x = -1 + √-4
x = (-1 + √-4) / 4
4x = -1 - √-4
x = (-1 - √-4) / 4
Thus x = (-1 + √-4) / 4 or (-1 - √-4) / 4

First recognize that this is a quadratic equation which means you can use the quadratic formula unless the directions tell you to complete the square.
4x^2 +2x +5 =0
a=4
b=2
c=5
x= -(2) + â(2)2 – 4 (4)(5)
2(4)
X= [-2 +â4-80 ] over 8 = [-2 + â-76] over 8 = [-2 + 2iâ19] over 8 = [ -1 + iâ19] over 4
the other answer is the worked the same [ -1 - iâ19] over 4

4x² + 2x + 5 = 0
x = -2/8 ± â[4 - 4•4•5] / 8
x = -1/4 ± â-76 / 8
x = -1/4 ± â(-4•19) / 8
x = -1/4 ± 2iâ19 / 8
x = -1/4 ± iâ19 / 4

4x^2 + 2x + 5 = 0
Just by looking at that I know the answer's gonna be an imaginary number.
If you want that anyway we'll use the quadratic formula...
(-2 +/- â(4-80))/8
(-2 +/- â(-76))/8
(-1 +/- â(-19))/4
so your answers are:
(-1 + â(19))/4, (-1 - iâ(19))/4

4x^2 = -2x - 5
4x^2 + 2x + 5 = 0
now all you have to do is plug the numbers into the quadratic formula
