This is a quadratic equation with a = 1, b = 4, and c = -45

x = [ -b ± √(b² - 4ac) ] / (2a)
==> plug in numbers
x = [ -4 ± √(4² - 4(1)(-45)) ] / (2(1))
==> simplify
x = [ -4 ± √(16 + 180) ] / (2(1))
==> simplify further
x = [ -4 ± √(196) ] / (2)
==> square root
x = [ -4 ± 14 ] / 2
==> break into two formulas:
x = (-4 + 14) / 2 = 10 / 2 = 5
... OR ...
x = (-4 - 14) / 2 = -18 / 2 = -9

So, your two answers are x = -9 and x = 5.

X=-9 or X=5 are your answers

they probably want you to do this long hand. look up the quadradic formula

A=1 because there's nothing in front of X^2
B=4 because the 4 is in front of the X
C=-45

x = [- 4 ± √ (16 + 180) ] / 2
x = [- 4 ± √196 ] / 2
x = [- 4 ± 14 ] / 2
x = 5 , x = - 9
