I did that once and it was so bad I just had to throw the oven out and buy a new one. Thank goodness you can get them for under $50 these days!

It's a really hard smell to get rid of. First wash the inside of your microwave thoroughly, take out the glass tray and wash it too. The smell usually stays on the little piece of paper on the wall of the microwave. I think its a filter or something...Try washing it a bit with a cloth too. Then, put a pyrex dish in the microwave with about a two cups of water and some cinnamon. Put the microwave on high for a few minutes so that the water and cinnamon boils and steams, and gives off a nice smell. This should help to dissipate the odor in your microwave.

Put a small amount of baking soda in a bowl and add 3 teaspoons of vanilla extract to it. Turn microwave on medium heat for 3 minutes, May have to repeat. That's how I got rid of the burned popcorn smell. You might try scrubbing the oven with baking soda and water to remove the stain.

Do the boiling water with WHITE vinegar in it that others have suggested, just keep bringing it to a boil and shutting the microwave off, then doing it again a number of times, letting it set for 10 minutes or so between boils. Rinse the interior, then scrub the inside down with a baking soda and water slurry and rinse well. Don't mix the baking soda with any vinegar residue, or it will foam up! To get rid of the smells:

Fill a small bowl with a 50-50 mixture of water and white vinegar, then set it in the oven and turn the oven on high for 5 minutes. When the mixture boils, it will remove stubborn smells inside the vents and loosen food particles on the oven walls. Be careful when you remove the bowl!!!
Wipe down the oven walls with a clean sponge.
leave the door open to air dry...

Another method you can use to get rid of odors in your microwave is to mix up a half cup of lemon juice with a cup of water in a microwave-safe dish. Place the dish inside your oven and heat the liquid for a couple minutes on the "high" power setting. Carefully remove the dish, then leave the door open to allow the inside to air out.

Take A Glass measuring cup, fill it with about 1 cup of Vinegar and put it in the microwave. Cook for 2 minutes *on high or normal*...

hopefully this will help get the smell out, although it'll smell like vinegar for a time.
