I used to sneak out all the time. I don't remember ever being caught, that was a long time ago. I always used to worry that my house was gonna catch on fire in the middle of the night while I was gone.

When I was a little girl around the ages of 7 & 8 during the summer time when I was supposed to be taking a nap in the afternoon.

I had these dolls that were the exact same size as me. One was a Cinderella doll & the other was an Indian doll.

I liked switching clothes with them. Sticking them in my bed & covering them up so that it looked like I was still in bed.

I knew that when my mom checked on me she would just open the door look in, but not come near enough to wake me up or disturb my sleep.

Once I had on my dolls clothes, I would go to the bedroom window , open it & slip outside, to go play in the field.

In my Cinderella gown I would dance around & twirl. I liked the way it billowed out & swirled. It was pink chiffon dusted with silver sparkling accents. Beneath the layers of chiffon was tulle and satin. I also wore the shiny tiara & the glass slippers which of course weren't really glass although they were clear with touches of crystals and silver upon them.

Sometimes I would chase after butterflies & pretend I was a fairy dancing in the field.

When I would put on my Indian dolls clothes I would go into the field and admire nature, lie on the grassy field & watch the clouds. Pretend to be riding a horse. Pretend to be playing a tom tom. And just try to imagine how my Indian ancesters, had lived & what their lives had been like. Or I would pretend I was Tigerlily from Peter Pan.

I normally didn't stay out long. Most of the time I was back home & in bed within an hour.

Except one afternoon I was having too much fun making stories up in my mind to write that I lost track of how late it was.

The sun was setting when I broke from my enchanting daydreams & imagination long enough to realize I'd been gone too long.

I ran home, didn't hear or see any of my brothers or sisters. I went to my bedroom window, opened it quietly and began pulling myself up to crawl through.

Halfway through the window my gown caught on a nail . I tried to free it . It was difficult considering my position. While I was working on it.... I failed to hear my mother come into the room....She whisked me out of the window & paddled my bottom.

My mom was furious with me. My dolls disappeared soon after. My days of escaping out the bedroom window during nap times or any other times, to play make believe were permanently over. I could still play make believe but not in my dolls clothes and not without permission.

My dad was at work during all this so he only knew whatever my mom told him. He left the discipline of my brothers, sisters & me completely up to mom.

On the otherhand it didn't prevent my actual sleepwalking. Those times I had no idea how I had gotten where they would find me sleeping. That however is a different story.

Everything I did as a child was great preparation for when I became a mother myself. My own children found they couldn't pull the wool over my eyes about much of anything. I was more prepared in many ways as to what I could expect from my own children. And now I'm a grandmother , who has the pleasure of seeing my children experience some of the interesting escapades my grandchildren have done. Such clever scamps.

No. I thought about it just because it sounded like fun, but, I didn't have to sneak out if I wanted to go somewhere.
