ok. there are 4 steps that we need to do. first define the variable, second is to write out the equation, the third is to write what the variable equals and the fourth is to write out the answer.
1. A clown weighs 60 lb more than a trapeze artist. The trapeze artist weighs two thirds as much as the clown. How much does each weigh? Choices for the weight of the trapeze artist: 110, 120, 125.

2. Elena has one and a half times as much money as Ramon. Together they have $225. How much money does each have? Choices for the number of boys: 191, 202, 207.

thanks for everyones helpl!!

let clown weight be x
and artist weight be y
x=y+60.........................(1)
y=2/3x..........................(2)
(2)in(1)
x=2/3+60
1/3x=60
x=180
y=2/3*180
=120
so artist trapeze weight =120
and clown weigh 180

elena =x
roman =y
x=1.5y.............................................(1)
x+y=225..............................................(2)
(1)in(2)
y+1.5y=225
2.5y=225
y=90
x=135

1.
C = weight of clown
T = weight of trapeZe artists

The clown has 60 dollars more than the trapeze artist:
C = T + 60

The trapeze artist has 2/3 as much as the clown
T = (2/3)C

To solve, substitute one of these into the other. Let us take the first one and start from there:
C = T + 60
C = (2/3)C + 60
(1/3)C = 60
So C = 180
And T = 120 since T = (2/3)C

2.
E = amount of money Elena has
R = amount of money Ramon has

Since together they have 225 dollars
E + R = 225

Also Elena has one and a half times as much as Ramon:
E = (3/2)R

Again combine the equations:
E + R = 225
(3/2)R + R = 225
(5/2)R = 225
R = 2(225)/5
R = 90
E = 135 since E + R = 225

"Choices for the number of boys: 191, 202, 207."
Don't see where "number of boys" has much to do with this problem.

1. Let w be the weight of the trapeze artist, in pounds.
Then the clown weighs (w+60) pounds, and so we have
w = (2/3) (w + 60)
Multiplying through by 3 gives
3w = 2(w + 60) = 2w + 120
and hence w = 120.
So the trapeze artist weighs 120 pounds.

2. Let Elena have $e and Ramon have $r. Then we have
e = 3r/2
e + r = 225
So 3r/2 + r = 225; multiply through by 2 to get
3r + 2r = 450
so 5r = 450 and r = 90.
Then e + 90 = 225, so e = 135.
So Elena has $135 and Ramon has $90.
