East and West define jealousy differently. As well, jealousy and envy can be seen as being similar but different.
Jealousy relates specifically to an object -- perhaps a specific person -- that another has that we want. The person who we are jealous of becomes the object of our anger and resentment. Envy generally relates to objects other than people -- a trait, a talent, a trinket, etc.
The true problem of jealousy is the wanting of another that someone already has. A jealous friend, a jealous lover, many of us have had the experience of someone who wanted someone that we are with.

Jealousy is one of those human "instincts" that is very very subtle and hard to define. Unlike happiness or anger, the feeling of jealousy starts from the 'unconscious' and might remain unconscious for a while or at least until you bring it to consciousness through self-reflection'.
Jealousy normally starts at the level of perceptual experience. Therefore It can happen so quickly that your conscious side simply cannot catch up with the speed of its occurance. eg, You get this 'edgy' or 'uncomfortable feeling' the moment you saw someone with something that you 'want' or 'need' but don't have (eg, a good looking boy friend or a flashy car).
Some ppl think that its possible to avoid the feeling of jealousy but i don't think so. I think its possible to supress or control it but its impossible to completely avoid it from invading our senses unless you can think faster than your 'thoughts' but thats just impossible.

Jealousy involves developing hatred along with selfish desire.
Envy --- "Wow, I wish I had one of those"
Jealousy --- "He thinks he's all that with one of those"
You also just witnessed the male/female differential, lol....
You'd NEVER hear a guy utter the line above after "jealousy", not a straight one, anyway.

Jealousy is actually an animal instinct. It has helped to keep us together as couples by increasing the chances of bonding. It is common in primates in order to prevent their mates from wandering. Bonded pairs are more successful in breeding.

Jealousy is a form of envy that is usually selfishly based on circumstancial evidence. For instance a
guy getting angry because one of his friends talk to his girlfriend. On the other hand when a mate or girlfriend cheats. It's okay because of the circumstances.

I think it is defined as a negative emotion that you experience when someone has something that you want. But I think it's more than that. Like if you happen to glance over and see your boyfriend laughing with another girl, and for no reason a very strong feeling shoots through you, and you suddenly hate her. It's also related to fear of losing something that you treasure. I think it's a very human emotion that you can't control, but you CAN control how you react to it.
