JFK is probably going to be a popular answer. He DECREASED tax rates. Believe it or not (when you look at what Teddy has done.) He said Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country. Smart guy, good leader.

Just a comment about President Clinton and his "balancing the budget." Why did H. Ross Perot (a true nut in some regards) post a chart during his 1992 election campaign showing the federal deficit becoming a surplus in about 1996 and then heading back into a deficit starting in around 2000? He was using GAO figures that showed this happening before Bill Clinton became President. How did President Clinton contribute to something was was already known?

The greatest Republican president is by far Abe Lincoln. The greatest Democratic President is Frankin D. Roosevelt.

1. FDR
2. Woodrow Wilson did not create the UN he called for the League of Nations (of which the U.S. was never a part of and was abolished before WWII)
3. James K. Polk
4. Andrew Jackson
5. Harry Truman
6. JFK
12. The rest of your list (I think they were all equally bad)
13. Bill Cliton (Should have been impeached and wasn't)
14. Jimmy Carter (Iran Hostages, gas lines)

How come you didn't include Thomas Jefferson (Declaration of Independence, Louisiana Purchase), James Madison(Father of the Constitution, War of 1812), James Monroe(Monroe Doctrine), or John Quincy Adams(just wondering)?

In which case I think your list would then rank
1.FDR
2.Thomas Jefferson/James Madison
3. Woodrow Wilson/James Monroe/John Quincy Adams/James K Polk
4. Andrew Jackson
5. Harry Truman
6. JFK
12. The rest of your list (I think they were all equally bad)
13. Bill Cliton (Should have been impeached and wasn't)
14. Jimmy Carter (Iran Hostages, gas lines)

BTW: Andrew Johnson's term cannot really be considered a Democratic Presidency (he was Lincoln's VP and was on the "No Party Ticket" when elected as VP, back then the presidential candidate didn't select a running mate).

1. LBJ (screwed up Vietnam but he was the only man to pass the social programs like welfare and civil rights)

I won't bother rating the others on your list but I'd have ranked Carter lower (not the worst but he was ineffective as the President, he lost any influence over Congress)... JFK is way over rated, a visionary in a way and a charismatic man but he could do very little with civil rights (in spite of the rhetoric); Johnson really did some arm twisting to get all the social programs that Kennedy envisioned.

Hmm, couldn't all the presidents be considered democratic considering they were all elected by a democracy?

Oh, and lets not forget that your beloved Bill Clinton made us the laughing stock of the entire world while selling our *** to China, renting out the Lincoln Bedroom, and stealing items from the White House when they left (which, by the way, were paid for by the American taxpayers). But I guess high morals aren't REALLY what make a great president right? well at least not to a lib

I won't do the full list, because I'd have to think too much. I agree on FDR though. He's widely considered number one by Democrats. I'll take exception to your relatively high ranking of James K. Polk however. Even though he contributed more to what our nation has become than probably any other on the list and he shares my birthday, he is my least favorite. He stole the richest parts of Mexico. He picked a fight with a weaker neighbor, and then slaughtered them. And what was his great defense? What were we taught in school? MANIFEST DESTINY. God told him it was his destiny to murder for land essentially. Stellar. If you are going to object to Andrew Jackson for the Indian removal act, then I think you have to object to Polk's Mexican-American War. And we wonder why they want to come here. Maybe cause we stole all their valuable resources?

I really liked Jimmy Carter and still do.

But as for the greatest, I would have to say FDR, then JFK, then Clinton and then Carter. I think it is difficult to compare the more recent Presidents to those who served long ago. Maybe just because I wasn't alive then.

Whenever someone tells me that the Republican party is the party of God (and I've heard it a thousand times) or when they say that you have to be a Republican if you believe in God - I remind them that Jimmy Carter is one of the most Christian Presidents we have ever had.

He is truly one of the best souls on the planet!

FDR, though I think George Washington was the best president we ever had and he didn't like political parties. He saw them as a downfall to our way of life by dividing people up! I think he was right! See his Farewell speech in 1796.

Wilson did more than create the UN. He fought WW I and finally got states to ratify the constitution that gave women the right to vote!

18 year old. you didn't have to tell us your age. We could tell it, at least I could!
