is it illegal for someone to recod a conversation without my knowledge (in australia)?

a guy recorded my conversation and i only found out when he rang a friend and my friend asked if he was recording the conversation because she culd hear an echo. can anyone help me out? i live in australia

If he is recording a telephone conversation without your consent it is against the law -- the telecommunications act, unless it is done by the police/security agencies with a "Search Warrent". If he is recording the conversation face to face without your consent then there is a gray area, but generally considered acceptable.
