This is the play dough recipe that I have used for both my own kids and for the local kinder.

2 cups plain flour
4 tablespoons Cream of Tartar *Non-toxic perservative
2 tablespoons cooking oil *Makes it smooth
1 cup of salt
2 cups water
Mix the above ingredients in a saucepan, and stir over medium heat for 3 - 5 minutes until the mixture thickens and congeals, and can form a ball. Cool slightly.
Then knead in food coloring to make different colored batches.
This mix will keep for about 2 - 3 weeks or longer if kept refrigerated.

what I use to do when I was a kid was take flour and mix it with water (place food coloring for added colors) It doesn't last like play douh but it is non toxic. I can't remember the measurements

i always used the home made kind made with jsut water flour and salt and it tasted aweful so kids wont want to eat it but it wont hurt them if they do and some food coloring if you want it colored..... keep it in a zip lock bag in the fridge or you can shape it and let it harden in the window sill (thats what i did as a kid)
