I am amazed at the state of pollitics in Aussey and the lack of interest from the society about making a better future for australia and the world in more ways than just getting wealthier or having a stong Economy. John Howards Government seem to be great for the economy and wealth but are Aussies selling there souls in exchange for personal wealth? Australia also deserves an opposition, but this Rudd geezer never offers alterentives; his government spend more time attacking what the Libberals are doing rather than giving alternatives, its like a show of PUNCH and JUDY with the two main political parties here. Why is it so poor!

I am from the uk have been in Aussey for the past year. I thought uk pollitics was bad, i was expecting better here but its apauling and i think Australia deserves so much better. The discusions i hear on abc radio do not ask enough probing questions of the australian polotians and many lies go unchallenged. I agree Howard has done no good for Australian society, but australia deserves an opposition and one that will give a believable and healthy alternative.

Seems these answers have howard well and truely sussed.
Having travelled the world, Aussies do have a lot of personal wealth and understanding global trade that wealth is in part coming from other countries whos own citizens live in extream poverty so we can have cheap goods.
A change of government is needed for Australia but Rudds team need to be pushed to explain what they will do in detail instead of playing punch and judy with the current lot.
(geezer - means Bloke)

You do not say which country you come from. Is it from America where the Democrats and Republicans are so similar one cannot tell the difference between the two in policies. OR, are you from Britain where there is very little difference between the conservative parties and similarly between the Labour Party and the Socialist Left (or whatever it is). At least there is some difference between the Labour policies in Britain compared with the Conservative party policies, but people like Tony Blair took Labour too far to the right.

Step 1, Aussey????/ Sorry it's spelt "Aussie"
Step 2, We dont use the term "geezer" in Australia, please define geezer.....????
Any way the Australian poltical ap has been shaken up by a ver smart opposition eader,Rudd is pushing the Howard camp to their limit to be open and more honest about their intentions for the genenral Australaian public. The Howard governmenr is not responsible for promoting a strong economy, I would say the Chinese and Indinan demand for our raw materials has caused our increasing strength in economy, our GDP is up as a direct result of our commodity exports to Asia.
We have just see a government boast a massive budget surplus of 17 billion+ in the pockets of the treasurer tight **** Costello. This is a shameful position to be in, especially when we are rated so far down in the OECD. Peoples' personal savings is in the negative on average as mortgages and general living expenses take more money out of our pockets than what is going in, the state of our public health and education systems are so poor we have to wait hours and up to days becuse the Howard government wont bother to spend any more money on improving the lves of Australains, don't try to tell me that Rudd has provided no alternatives when he has been taliking about improving these basic human needs from almost day 1 as an opposition leader.
I dont see personal wealth when so many aussies re living below the poverty line, Howard tries to show a low unemploymnet rate of under 5% or so, do you know how this has been achieved? First workchoices has taken our rights away basically making Labor cheaper to obtain, then by realigningt he goal posts, apparently full employment is measured at at least 20 hours a week, so if you work 20 hours a week, barely enought to feed yourself, you are declared fully employed and therefore not unemployed. That is a farce!
Anyway enjoy your time in our country.

I don't think politics in Australia is 'bad' in fact it hasn't been this interesting for a very long time. Rudd and Labor are not perfect but at least they have got the Liberals and Howard on the run for the first time in 11 years!! Howard and his cronies have done so much damage to this country and have altered the very nature of Australian society and most of it has been done behind closed doors and without the knowledge of the people. I think that once Howard announces the election you will see the opposition release all their policies. They really don't have to tell us anything yet but they have released their health and employment policies so that is something.
What I would like to know is where are Howard's policies? Is there anything new or can we look forward to more random, ad hoc, one off interventions into States and Territories business?

We are getting wealthier because of the mining boom that has nothing to do with Howard.
The only Aussies selling our souls are John Howard's government we use to be a fair-go for the battlers country now we are put big business first above all else.
If you think that by running along after Bush and sending our troops to Iraq and setting the country up for major terrorist problems in the future is a good legacy to leave Australians well you vote for Howard but I along with many others will not be.

I might float the idea that Rudd is keeping his cards to his chest.
The Howard govt has spent 10 years cutting funding to people who disagree with it and rewarding idiots who tow the party line. The public is unaware of how distorted it's all become. Kevy has to play along for now to avoid being devoured.
If you really think he's doing poorly then you really need to research the previous Labor leader. Frankly I considered him a Liberal backbencher!
