The way I see it, if marijuana is going to be kept illegal much longer, tobacco products like cigarettes, cigars, and chew, should also be prohibited. Marijuana is by far safer than cigarettes.

Cigarettes kill people. That's a fact. I have never heard of anyone dying from excessive marijuana usage, or any deaths attributed to one's behavior while under the influence.

Alcohol and tobacco can and will, pending prolonged use, kill people. If marijuana use and posession is to remain punishable by law, alcohol and tobacco misuse should be taken much more seriously than it has been in this country.

All I see in the argument against legalization is hypocrisy, but sadly, we've become a nation that disregards how biased and pharisaical certain laws are.

I say legalize. The statistics really speak for themselves. No liberal/conservative debate is going to alter them in any way.

It absolutely should be legal, I won't try to enlighten with prison data, but the amount of money it costs tax payers to track, arrest and process and then jail Marijuana offenders is a travesty. something like 75k per federal inmate per year ???????.... for what? I can't believe that you are all that backward that you never tried or know people that smoke pot... give it a break already. Marijuana is legal in the lowest crime rated countries in the world.. as for it being a gate way drug,.. Cigarettes and ALCOHOL always come first and kill 5 times as many people yearly as all illegal drugs combined... Like I said I won't try to enlighten you because you've made up that very small thing in your skull....
but think of it this way... why do you want to allow the government to make choices for you . The right always talks about the liberals infringing on their freedoms, and yet they support infringement with every issue????????

If people thought it through a little more they would see that really, legalizing marijuana is a far more republican stance. The idea is that it would help the economy, because it's such a guaranteed way for money to change hands. Whether this is true or not is beside the point; the theory is that the more money moves, the better an economy gets. Anyone I've talked to who wanted to legalize it was thinking more of the economy than of any potheads.

I'm not a liberal, but I can see no reason why the government should tell anybody what he can or can't put into his own body. I've never personally used or even tried weed, but no weed user has ever bothered or threatened me. Alcohol is legal and I've known plenty of violent @sshole drunks. When was the last time you've heard of a man beating his wife because he was under the influence of marijuana? I don't think it's ever happened.

It is about personal responsibility. I can have as many alocoholic drinks as I want but can't smoke a weed. Prohibition only creates black market which leads to crime, high prices, and money for the privitized jails, etc. Legalize it and tax it. How do we fix Social Security & Medicare expected shortfalls, this is the way.

The same reason why the thinking conservative wants to legalize it. It will help stop a lot of $$$ going to drug lords and terrorists for one. It's not dangerous to most people like alcohol is....prescription drugs would be in less demand also. The liberal thought is here to liberate you from the slavery of the conservative mindset. Grow nads and help this country keep from being a nation of robots, sheep and bible thumping rednecks!

edit: Thomas B.....you need to get your facts straight.... conservatives are cokeheads.....I'd rather deal with a liberal pot smoker anyday. We hold our head high to puff on a joint...you guys have to bow down to the mirror to sniff your crap! (The mirror is your best friend...you get to look at you beautiful self too! Wow...two birds with one stone! Cheers!

well i'm a liberal and WOULDN'T want the govt to legalize marijuana. why would they even want to? local and state govts make way too much revenue off drug violations, it would be uneconomic of them to legalize it. plus if they did it would be heavily taxed and you wouldn't have access to black market varieties that have the potential of being more potent, cleaner, or generally better. the only reason people want it legal is so they don't have to worry about the rammifications of getting busted which is stupid because if you just keep yourself in check and don't doing anything dumb then the likelihood of getting in trouble is slim.

a friend of mine had a genetic incurable form of bone cancer. he basically lived in a hospital on a morphine drip (which didn't help him much). if it weren't for the pot brownies his sister snuck in for him, he would have had a harder time coping. at least he died with a stomach full of homemade goodness and a sense of relaxation that no IV could've given him.

I'm confused by your post.
Your question suggests that you're AGAINST the legalization of marijuana, but your following comments lead the reader to believe that you view marijuana in a positive light....
No one needs to smoke a J to be confused by your meaning here.
But I will say THIS....!
There is an organization called LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) made up of liberals and conservatives alike that want to see our "war on drugs" come to an end.
These are lawyers, cops, judges (some are ex-lawyers,ex-cops,ex-judges) who know first-hand how damaging the legal system can be when it comes to ruining folks lives over something so basic as the right of people to get their buzz on.
Check'em out.

I have said this many times, Liberals are like pigeons they want to keep thinking everything is fine and keep their eyes closed and live in a world made of clouds, while the cats chew their bones.

Marijuana is a tool which helps them keep their eyes closed.

Example: the great Clinton years, where ENRON robbed not only American public, and their employees but friendly nations, Where Terrorists planned and attacked US 6 times but in Liberals mind everything was fine and those were the 8 glorious years.
