Its the quality rating of materials and construction . The more xxxx's the more expensive . However, some hats have so many xxx's that they look better in a museum than on your head .
Hat sizes are measured in numbers like 6 1/2 , 7 3/8 . I have a big head so I wear 7 5/8 .

Quality, 300 X's are the most I've seen but the less X's the lesser the quality

X means extra. In this case, it means extra-extra-extra-extra-extra-(most likely)large as in XXXXXL.
