The biggest problem after post Titanic was he had the image as mainly a pretty face but the movie still made him a household name along with the beautiful Kate Winslet. Yet he proved to be more than just a pretty face with the intense role in the drama The Beach, playing the bad guy conman in the drama Catch Me If You can then showing his range by changing in the last hour of the movie including helping the FBI rather than going back to his tempting old ways of fake identies. He played another imigrant this one that can fight in the Historical Drama Gangs of New York, then really showing his talent, acting chops, and talent as the legendary Howard Hughes displaying his flaws as a womanizer, ocd, and wanting to controll everything, but winning you over with his change including one hell of a scene before flying the Herculus should have won the Oscar, played a challenging intense role in the crimedrama The Departed showing his change throught the movie who wins you over, then again in

Blooddiamond. He has past the type cast test and shown to be a dominat leading man as he remains a house hold name. I think it's fair to say that the L in Leonardo for him stands for Legandary and that is what he is becoming.

Well I don't think about him too much, but it's true that he wasn't one of my favorite actors. I was, however, impressed with his character in Blood Diamond, an intense yet enjoyable film. So, I think he's getting better anyway.

I definitely agree with all you said. He has not made a bad movie to date. He excels in every performance and becomes his character. He is also very believable in all his roles. He adapts to the character and its emotions and it shows through on film. Leonardo was amazing in The Departed as Billy. He definitely showed his range as an actor. He was magnificent as Howard Hughes in The Aviator. I could not believe how well he portrayed a person with ocd. I would definitely say that the "L" in Leonardo stands for Legendary. To date he has become one of, or if not the best actor in the world with his ever evolving movie choices and excellent performances in all his films.

i don't remember him being great in Titanic.
He is a good actor... just the roles in plays isn't particularly the best ones.

He seems to do his job just fine.
Screen writers' tend to make him look a bit cheesey.... and or phony.

He is now maturing... and well... he now has some versatility and spontaneous improvisions that makes him a greater actor.

Where as before: he just did what was presented in front of him?

Let's not even forget that he's also a Producer. Guess you could say you won't be needing anyone to answer your own question, since you've already answered it yourself.
