keep looking. you don't want that piece of junk. once one thing breaks on a car like that, more thing follow. right now it's 2nd gear, next month, it could be reverse, after that, that clutch and throw out bearing need to be replaced. just forget about that car and keep looking. if you're buying a car, you don't want to buy somebody else's heartache. by the way, it means that it won't go into 2nd gear. you start in 1st, then shift straight to third. it's a 4 speed apparently, if he says then it goes to overdrive. the air needs to be recharged, and it may have a leak, that's expensive to fix. do you really want a car that doesn't lock if you decide to put some kind of noce stereo in it? what about if you want to go out somewhere and leave something in the car? fuhgeddabowdit.

Sounds like a car you do not want to buy. But judging by the description that you gave when he says the car does not go into second that means second gear does not work. When you put the car in D there are gears 1st through whatever the car has and as you drive from a dead stop the car will automatically go through these gears. Second is not there so the RPM's will probably rev high and the car will bang into third. Hope that helps you.

If your budget is under $300 then you've found your car. If the silly seller thinks it's worth more than that let him keep it. You may have noticed that I didn't ask what model year the Contour is. That's because it doesn't matter. They haven't been made for years and the newest one with a bad transmission is not worth $300.

You will be putting more money in this car than it is worth. Stay away from this one if you want dependable transportation. It won't be on the road much longer, unless you can get cheap parts and are a good mechanic.

Find another one, even if you have to pay a little more.

Find a different car to buy. Tranny repair is costly and the rest could add up quickly.
