I am currently borrowing my adviser's laptop. Just now it had some strange issues and cut off and would not start back up. I unplugged it from the AC adapter and it came back on. I tried to plug the adapter back in and it shut off and would not come back on. I am plugging it into the comp before the outlet. What could cause this problem? I am a little nervous because I am borrowing it and I don't want to tell him it broke while it was in my care.

Do adapters go bad just like that? It is the one that came with the comp (IBM ThinkPad)

I've been using it with the adapter for over 2 weeks. Would the voltage just change like that?

It could also be a heat issue. When computers get too hot they shutdown to prevent damage. Normally when a laptop runs off the battery it doesn't work at full speed keeping it cooler. When you plug it in it speeds up. So the question is how hot is the bottom. If its really really almost burn your hand hot just turn it off and let it cool down, then when it's cooler try plugging it in and see what happens.

If I'm reading your question correctly.. the notebook will not power on when the AC adaptor is plugged in.
If this is the case, the AC adaptor may be damaged or have a short. It may have been dropped; sometimes a ball of solder can come loose inside and also be a problem.
I need more detail to help further. What kind of adaptor is this, how many conductors at the computer side, knowing this will aid in testing. Is it a slide connector (makes your fingers slide forward or back to lock the connector into place?
Let me know.... I still like you quotes...

the adapter has gone bad. I tried to charge a tracfone using the adapter from a non working cordless phone I have, and this made the tracfone cut off when I plugged the adapter in because the adapter was bad.

Geo,
The power cord is faulty. The laptop is looking for power from the cord when its connected and since none is coming through, it shuts down. If you unplug the cord, it knows to run off the battery, so you should get some life out of it. Your going to need a new cord.
Sorry

The adapter may be putting too much current into the laptop. If that does happen, it should shut off to prevent damage. If it still works when its unplugged, the laptop should be (mostly) intact.

Is that teh adapter that goes with that laptop? Sounds like a mismatch. Could be a broken power controller. Best bet is to fess up, you did nothing wrong.

Well sounds like you have a broken connection in your power outlet on your computer port. I have seen this on some Toshibas. Will have to send into Toshiba and get it repaired. I hope that is it under warranty.

Could be a problem with device drivers , hardware or software . This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes . From http://fixit.in/bluescreenofdeath.html
