acceleration is the ability to get faster- if your accelarating- xcuse the spelling- your going faster. But velocity is speed with direction. So 3 m/h North is velocity

Velocity is the rate of change of position in one particular direction. It is a vector quantity.

Suppose a body moves 100 metres in 4 seconds in any one particular direction. Its velocity is Distance/Time
. . . . . . =100/4 = 25 mts/sec

The acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. This is also a vector qantity.

Suppose the body moves 25 mts in the first second. Naturally its velocity is 25 mts/sec. Next second it travels more distance. third second, it travels still further. Like this every second the body is going on increasing its velocity. Or we can say that the body is getting "accelerated". Let the body travels 225 mts in the tenth second. ie The velocity f the body increased from 25 mts/sec to 225 mts/sec in ten seconds.
Now the change in velocity = 225 - 25 = 200 mts/sec
Time taken for this chnge = 10 seconds
Hence, the rate of change of velocity = 200mts/sec/10sec
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . = 20 mts/sec/sec
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . = 20 mts/sec²

acceleration effects velocity.

If you take your position and go 0 m/s are you going to change your position? No

The same thing with velocity and acceleration.

Say to go 0 m/s and you accelerate at 1m/s^2. every second you willl increase your speed by 1 m. if you accelerate for 3 s you go 3m/s.

You acceleration effects how quickly your velocity changes. Or is defined as the rate of change of velocity.

Acceleration is the rate of change of your velocity. Velocity is your speed and direction.

For example, if you are moving at a constant 5 miles per hour in a direction, you have a velocity of 5 mph, but since you're not speeding up or slowing down, your acceleration is 0.

In science, velocity is usually measured in meters per second, while acceleration is measured in meters per second per second, or meters per second squared.

Instantaneous acceleration is also the derivative of a velocity function, but that's only pertinent if you're in calculus.

A brief glossary:

Speed is how fast you're going. Example: 50 miles an hour.

Velocity is how fast you're going, and in which direction. Example: 50 miles an hour, east.

Acceleration is a measure of how fast you're going is changing, and in which direction.
Example: Velocity decreasing by 50 miles an hour squared, west.
Acceleration can be positive and negative, to speed up and to slow down.

And to further confuse things:
A negative velocity in the opposite direction is the same as a positive velocity in the original direction.

Velocity is speed and direction. Example a car traveling 70kph Eastward, has a velocity of 70kph east... Speed is plain old rate of travel.

Acceleration is increase in speed per unit of time. Example a car starts out from an intersection from a standstill, and ten seconds later is doing 50kph, that car has an acceleration of 5 kilometers per hour per second.

That was all true BTW, but acceleration is a change in velocity over time.
