Only bridesmaids wear "prom" dresses. I guess is to make the bride to look more lovely and standout.
The LITTLE BLACK DRESS is always a winner and acceptable. I have a cute strapless and cocktail style with sphaghetti straps I wear to weddings and formal events. I use a similar dress at a part-time job i have as a hostess at a country club. We have lots of weddings there and you cant go wrong with a cocktail style dress. Use some jewelry only as an accent but not too much.
For an afternoon or garden wedding a "tea dress" or something made of a chiffon material in a spring/summer color is teh answer.
Any more ? Just email me ok!

In general black is a somber color, afterall it's what's worn at funerals! I wouldn't say never wear it though. Another thing to consider is culture. Some people have very formal or very colorful weddings and WOULD wear a prom dress. For example I am currently living in Mexico, and people like to get really fixed up and fancy at weddings, but in California, where I am originally from, I've gone to weddings where people are wearing jeans! Maybe you could find out wheither or not it is a "formal" wedding and take it from there.

Black is usually regarded as the wrong color to wear to a a wedding as it is solemn, and usually worn to represent mourning, like at a funeral. I would suggest that it depends on the time of day, and the season. Evening would be more formal, and day time would be less formal. So for the evening, you would wear a nice dress with heels that is something you'd wear for a formal event like a prom. You can never go wrong with simple. For the day time or afternoon, a tea-length summer dress or spring type dress is good, also you can wear a nice skirt and a nice blouse, or even a suit. Just remember that daytime is more casual, and night time is more formal, and you'll be fine.

Don't wear anything you would wear to prom because it is not your wedding, you don't want to outshine the bride!
The Little Black Dress is always a safe and easy alternative. If it is a summer wedding, try a dress that goes slightly above the knees. If it is a winter wedding, try a dress that hits the calves and top it off with a cropped jacket with bubble sleeves. Hope this helps!

Traditionally, guests don't wear black, white, or the colors in the wedding party.
The dress style should be on invitation - if it is evening - more formal; daytime - less formal.
Ask boyfriend what he is wearing - suit? wear a dress.
Tux? wear a gown.
Still don't know? Call RSVP number, and ask.
