i have a HP Deskjet D2345 printer with a slot for color ink and one for Black and white. will it work with just the black and white?

You may need to leave an empty color cartridge in the slot to avoid getting error messages.

Then set the printer to print in black only.

There is no black & white cartridge... just black.

Yes, all you have to do is set your printer settings to print in black only, this way even pictures are given the proper allocation of ink in order to come out correctly.
